Route to power. Two unlinked hydro grids. NTPC runs two unconnected hydro systems, Snare at about 30 MW and Taltson at about 18 MW, and 23 of the territory’s 33 communities run on diesel. The Snare to Taltson link that would pool them is unbuilt.
What would change it
The Taltson hydro expansion would add 60 MW and finally connect the two systems. It was referred to the federal Major Projects Office in March 2026, with a goal of producing power within ten years.
How you connect
There is no published process for a large load or a data centre. Two proposals are public: IceFox, a modular data centre near Hay River on Kátł’odeeche First Nation land that its backers say would run on Taltson hydro, and a concept for a Mackenzie River dam to power a data centre. Taltson has only a few megawatts to spare, so either would depend on new hydro.
